Industry Interaction & Placement Efforts at Indic

A Bachelor of Technology or Bachelor of Engineering degree is more desired than many of the other educational degrees by the students of the present era not only because of the rigor and societal prestige associated with its acquisition but also due to its much higher job-giving potential. Since a sizeable amount of money is paid by an engineering graduate, the degree would have lost much of its importance, glamour, and attraction had there not been a noticeably higher degree of placement security attached to it. Any day, an engineering degree ensures a much better opportunity in the professional sector than an equivalent educational degree of most of the other disciplines.

The engineering colleges apart from ensuring the completion of the engineering syllabus also take a few initiatives to ensure the placement of their students. Employability training, Industry Interface, and Seminars form a large share of the activities that the institutions of technology undertake to prepare their students for campus recruitment. The Indic Institute of Design and Research finds it necessary to train its students to make them not only employable but also fighters in every sphere of life. It follows a series of systematic activities designed to optimally exploit and harness the potential of all its students.

Employability training in Indic is a continuous affair and a part of the regular classes from day one of the first semester to the last day of the last semester. The primary focus of Employability training is on getting the students ready for placement. Apart from the trainers, who are regular members of the faculty, who train the students, expert and specialized trainers are also frequently utilized to provide a different perspective on training to the students. The strengths, weaknesses, problems, special attributes and skills of the students are identified and frequent counseling sessions and classes are conducted to contribute to their comprehensive development.

Purposeful seminars are also conducted to give the students a knowledge of many other topics related to their studies or useful to them, or those myriad other aspects of their engineering subjects which are either extracurricular or cannot be dealt with within the limited time period of their day-to-day classes, but which are still important from the point of view of placement. Indic encourages its students to go for summer training (no longer a requirement of the BPUT curriculum) in various technological organizations so that they may get not only a firsthand view of the practical demonstration of their theoretical learning but also a rough idea about the conditions in which they would work in the future. The institute has also planned to invite Industry professionals to share their experience with the students, inform them about the expectations of the professional sector and teach them a trick or two in the art of building a successful career. Apart from encouraging the students to take part in the various technology fests with plans of organizing its own in the offing, Indic, having completed two and a half years of existence, also aims at organizing a campus recruitment program for the students of the other engineering colleges to give a view of the placement scenario to its presently ineligible-for-the-campus students.

The Department of Training and Placement of Indic is continuously engaged in tapping more and more trustworthy recruiting sources to ensure that all its eligible students get a fair chance at employment on the Day of Placement for its own students. Without any intention of selling illusions to the student, the constant focus of this department is on providing him / her with the best possible opportunity as per his / her academic performance and demonstrable abilities. Conducting a few classes in the government technological organizations and institutions for its students also helps them to better understand the requirements and the environment of the industrial sector. Overall, the working style of and the discipline imposed by Indic is a clear cut indication of its intense desire to make its students employable at any cost. The nature and the intensity of the activities indulged in by Indic to make its training and placement program a complete success for its students mark it out an organization which takes it to heart if even a single eligible student of the institute, at the end of the day, is left high and dry in the professional sector.

Why Do Management Studies(MBA) after Engineering?

Perhaps, the most important reason behind the requirement, emergence, burgeoning continuity and progressively increasing success of capitalism and the private sector is the human being’s instinctive desire to be allowed full freedom to not only go all out in developing his / her potential but also expect the maximum possible recognition and return for his / her efforts expended and quality or skills displayed. The political and economic reasons behind the coming into existence and of age of the private sector may differ from country to country but the human element behind its beginning is basically the same; the most willing, talented and hardworking potential must be given the maximum scope for its realization and, consequently, must have the right to look forward to and demand the highest reward. The truly intelligent and hardworking individual who has given his / her best effort to develop his / her potential and skills will never be satisfied with an average or above average return on his / her investment. The best always expects and deserves the best and the right place for such an individual, professionally, is in the world of business where he / she may not only expect just recognition and reward for his / her achievements but also through his / her efforts contribute, directly or indirectly, to the betterment of his / her fellow beings and society in the long run. Though, an MBA degree is not necessary to achieve excellence in performance in business - genius businessmen don’t need an MBA degree to succeed in their fields - yet, a proper MBA degree makes the workings of the world of business a great deal easier and clearer to most of the above-the-average intellects who may not otherwise understand the intricacies and nuances of its systems and practices.

With the unprecedented rise of the corporate sector in the present era, an MBA degree, which qualifies a candidate to manage the affairs of that sector, has become the educational and professional degree to acquire. Because, money has become the most important and desirable object for most of the human beings and since, the maximum amount of money is required in the business sector and progress in business is all about more and still more money, it hardly requires extraordinary intelligence to comprehend how and why an MBA degree, the curriculum of which dishes out knowledge about business and its administration, has become so important of late. An MBA degree from an institution worth its grain is regarded as a passport to better job opportunities, more scope for the display of one’s qualities, satisfaction of greater ambitions, higher social status, more glamour, and greater compensation for a candidate’s abilities. Job sectors, which have a governmentally inspired style of functioning, with their nagging emphasis on fixed working hours and salary while providing security as the only benefit also generate laziness and banality as their pernicious products as a result of which they are slowly but steadily and surely losing their power to capture the imagination of the ambitious, determined, and hardworking individual who wants to cash in on every minute of his / her time.

The degree which liberates the earning potential of all of its holders has quite an impact on the field of technology when it comes to increasing the value of an engineer in the professional sector. A B. Tech or BE degree lands a job for the candidate but it is only an entry-level job in which he / she has to first learn the ropes as an average worker like many others, get some namesake promotions, and then wait expectantly for some years before he / she can even be considered as having the potential to lead or manage others. A candidate with educationally authentic B. Tech or BE and MBA degrees does not have to wait for that long, since he / she will enter the organization at the managerial level after which, if he / she has the requisite qualities and shows the expected performance, he / she can try and become a part of the management. Thus, apart from getting a definitely higher pay package, the career-oriented candidate will also save a lot of time in making it to the top of the organizational hierarchy.

There is another reason for career-conscious engineers to go for an MBA. The percentage of engineers who have made it to most of the business schools over the last fifteen years, according to most of the surveys, has been noticeably higher than that of the students from any other educational background. Such a phenomenon is not difficult to understand. Not only has the engineer to study for four years for his / her graduation but also his, if he / she has studied properly, abilities to comprehend, dissect, and analyze matters are substantially better than those of most of the students of the other disciplines. Most of the premier MBA entrance tests are heavily loaded with analytical quantitative problems, on which an engineer is expected to work better than most of the candidates from any other educational background. The curriculum of the engineering students, which is packed enough not to allow the students much time for non-curricular activities, also helps in building up, in the students, the kind of attitude, work ethic, punctuality, stress management qualities and discipline that is unavoidable for anyone who wants to enter and flourish in the corporate sector. Exposure to different types of events and situations, employability training classes, seminars, emphasis on punctuality and smartness acquired during the four years, make an engineer the best suited candidate for a business school and, subsequently, for the business sector.

The strongest reason, in my opinion, for any serious engineer worth his / her grain to get an MBA degree is simply the fact that it is a much better option to slog it out for more than eight hours a day in an organization with more dignity, responsibilities and importance for a fantastically higher pay package than to work one’s skin off for an any-day lower amount, which is what one gets in a job immediately after engineering. Once, the engineer with an MBA degree gets into the professional sector, he / she also comes to realize that the excitement and the satisfaction is about not only the fabulous payment that he / she ends up with but also the much tougher challenges that he / she has to face, the much greater responsibilities that he / she has to fulfill, and the constantly changing nature of the work and its importance. The very fact that he / she among the others has been selected for such work carries his / her ego, self-esteem, dignity, self-importance and pride to greater heights after which he / she willingly slogs it out to sustain them. An MBA then becomes a degree which provides the engineer many more avenues and opportunities to exploit his / her talent, take initiatives, satisfy his / her ambitions and allow them to grow and display his / her energy and skills with the surety that such activities will be rewarded at the end, a scenario which would not, in most of the cases, have been possible without it due to the mediocrity and monotonous regularity associated with most of the jobs directly after engineering. Finally, if the engineer knows his / her engineering to the point of theoretical and practical brilliance, then, who knows, he / she, after an MBA, may even understand its ultimate teaching, realize that it is much better to be one’s own master, end up becoming an entrepreneur as quite a few have done in the past and thus come across the possibility of squeezing the maximum out of the degree. Everyone who has had a stint in the world of business can attest to the fact that the only thing sure about it is its unpredictability and lack of surety and that tried, tested, and time honored constants become risk-generating variables in no time. It is this lack of surety which dares the courageous, adventurous, and talented to become excited enough to take risks in a bid to maximize their earnings and frightens the pusillanimous, lazy and self-satisfied to run away towards the security of their previous disappointingly paid jobs. It is in the very nature of those human beings, aiming to make it big on the pillars of their own vision, wisdom, energy, talent, skills, determination, capability and resources, to exploit whatever in them is positive and productive to the maximum extent humanly possible not only for the material reward or glory that such endeavor brings but also to content themselves that they have pushed themselves to their limits and given their best in living out their lives. After God, engineers are sometimes called, “Creators” due to which they are also expected to push themselves to the maximum extent humanly possible so as to deserve and extract the best out of an increasingly unforgiving, cruel, and Darwinian world. One must never waste one’s talent for not only what it can give to oneself but also the benefit that its realization may extend to others. Studying MBA thus becomes one of the stronger choices for the engineer who wants to live the life of his / her own dreams. When there are so many reasons for the engineers to go for an MBA, it is very difficult and, at times, impossible to understand why and how they are so satisfied and contented with the jobs that they already have.

Postscript: Variety is the spice and essence of life and the more we get, the merrier it is for us. No sane human being wants to be saddled with the same thing or work after a period of time. For work to be interesting to and bring out the best in its worker, it should have continuously changing and more challenging requirements and responsibilities. The worker should always be made to realize the progressively increasing degree of importance and expectation attached to the work and the rewards associated with the successful completion of it. Today, the development of technology moves at a breakneck speed and engineers can hardly be expected to lag behind. The continuous improvement on existing technology can be attributed to the perennial dissatisfaction shown by human beings in general and engineers in particular towards lack of change or monotony. This is also applicable to the professional sector, in which continuity with the same type of work over a period of time decreases one’s enthusiasm, energy and initiative taking ability and kills one’s ambition while doing it. Talent and skills are strangled and the unsatisfactory pay, hiking itself at the speed of a snail is no great comfort either. It is high time, especially for the engineers to realize that something much better, professionally and mentally, is only an MBA degree away.

Indic Institute of Design & Research, we provide inputs to the students about further studies and provide mentoring and counselling support for our students

Preparing for the Placement Day

Placement Day is the most important day in the academic life of an engineering student or for that matter any student in whose institution, recruitment from the campus by visiting organizations is a reality. To all the students, who are participants in the campus recruitment process of an institution, the Placement Day offers a chance to get noticed by and woo the prospective customers from the professional point of view. It also gives the candidates a first hand experience of not only the general and particular expectations from the candidate for a job but also the practical working of a system about which they have only heard in their training. The importance of this day is well understood when we consider that no candidate can afford to make even the slightest of mistakes and still hope to get away with it on this day. The length and continuity of the training of the candidates for this day points out to the amount of importance placed on the day by both the institutions and their students. For those fortunate and skillful enough to land a decent job for themselves, the immediate and the near future at least are safe professionally. Such is the importance of this day that it is impossible to either underestimate or overestimate its impact on a candidate’s future. For most of the students who study engineering, getting a job as soon as possible, once they are eligible to participate in the recruitment process, represents not only a triumphant achievement for the students but also provides a sense of security to the minds of their parents, waiting eagerly to get the worth of their investments back. It is a day on which pressure, expectation, nervousness and excitement compete amongst one another to make it the experience of a lifetime for the first-timers.

The importance of the day calls for a detailed preparation on part of the candidate to make it memorable for him / her. There are certain skills which the candidate has to develop over a period of time to perform well on this day. Most of the organizations taking part in the recruitment process have a three-tier process of selection. A Written Test to assess a candidate’s verbal, mathematical, analytical and reasoning ability, Group Discussion to check his / her breadth of knowledge, maturity of opinion, and fitness for teamwork, and Personal Interview to find out the depth of knowledge and decipher the personality of the candidate. Some of the organizations have a written round to check the subject or technical knowledge of a candidate while some others prescribe a Psychometric Test to lay bare the personality behind the persona and yet again there are some who conduct both the technical interview and the stress interview to judge the quality of a candidate.

For the written rounds, be they tests to determine subject or technical knowledge of the candidate or those assessing his / her verbal, mathematical, analytical and reasoning skills, the candidate has to follow a long term approach to prepare himself / herself. It is mainly because the questions in these tests are related to vocabulary or grammar or analytical understanding of the various branches of mathematics or logical or analytical reasoning, for which time is required. Regular attendance of the training classes aimed at developing the above-mentioned areas and skills, sufficient and sincere practice on the problems related to these areas and regular attendance of one’s daily classes as well as the classes dealing with non-curricular technical information related to one’s curricular subjects will prove immensely beneficial. The candidate has to not only attend the above-prescribed classes but also keep an open mind and learn as much as is possible for him / her. Apart from reading the newspapers regularly, the candidate must be in the habit of reading any analytical general awareness magazine of repute. Along with these, the candidate must try and acquire a basic knowledge of as many subjects as possible. Once the candidate is more or less aware of whatever is happening around him / her, he / she must try and develop his / her opinions on such matters. In developing his / her opinions on any topic or situation or person, the candidate must follow a rational approach and avoid extremes. Knowledge of etiquette, behavioral and other expectations of the professional sector and what is acceptable across various cultures is a must. The candidate must also take care to develop his / her communication skills and the willingness, ability, and patience to listen to others and avoid selfishness. All of these should help the candidate in getting ready for Group Discussion.

Preparation for personal interview requires the candidate to develop a persona that is acceptable to the recruiting organizers. The candidates must remember that since getting selected on the Placement Day marks the beginning of their professional career, they will be selected to the lowest position befitting their educational degree, in which knowledge acquired in the first six months or one year of training would be of much more importance (while doing their jobs) than that inculcated by the institution from which they acquired their educational degree after four years. To put it simply, knowledge about the subjects of one’s curriculum is important but what finally matters is whether one has those behavioral and mental attributes that are desired by the recruiting organization.

The candidate must not only have an unconfused understanding of his / her curricular subjects but is also expected to have some knowledge of related technical subjects. Since, the number of IT sector organizations has, over the years, surpassed that of the other sector recruiters, all the candidates who wish to go into the IT sector are expected to have a rudimentary knowledge of some of the non-curricular programming languages that are in popular use in that sector.

The candidate in developing his / her personality over a period of three and a half years must take care to include humility, patience, tolerance, endurance, ability to handle stress, inquisitive and energetic attitude, determination, honesty to oneself, self-esteem, perseverance, conflict resolution attitude and skills, willingness to obey directions, ability to adapt and adjust, smartness, discipline, methodological approach, result-oriented approach, punctuality, positive attitude, impartial judgment, problem-solving skills, discernment, moderation in outlook, willingness to learn, hardworking ability, ability of appreciation and confidence in self as well as others as elements of his / her personality.

Although the candidate in preparing for the interview must take it sincerely and seriously, he / she must never consider it as a burden. Rather, he / she must learn to enjoy it. Some amount of nervousness before the interview in the first timers is considered positive and implies seriousness on part of the candidate so he / she must not be afraid or ashamed to show it or speak about it when asked about it. The candidates are advised to develop in themselves an attitude of cooperation and not confrontation or argumentation while preparing for the interview. Though a smile on the face and humor in speech helps the candidate to no end in an interview, he / she must remember that the interview has a formal atmosphere where no degree of misplaced familiarity or casualness has any place.

Because of the kind of work ethics and degree of pressure associated with the professional sector of the present era, in almost all the interviews, an attempt in some form or the other will be made by the interviewer to disturb the composure of the interviewee due to which the candidates are expected to prepare themselves to keep their cool and equanimity even when the interviewee appears to be losing his / hers. Apart from preparing himself / herself on the expected questions for the interview, the candidate must have some respect for the intelligence of the interviewer and, consequently, avoid bluffing when he / she does not know the answer to a question. Thinking on the question for some seconds before coming out with its answer is considered a positive trait as it indicates not only the importance that a candidate pays to the question but also his / her desire and effort to provide the best possible answer to it. The candidates must try to not only follow all the tips and pieces of advice of the placement trainer regarding interviews but also glean as much information as possible on the experiences of their own seniors in it.

The candidate should avoid the temptation of copying and using the cheaply available Resumes or Curriculum Vitas on the Internet and must prepare his / her Resume or Curriculum Vitae only after a proper and honest SWOT (Strengths / Weaknesses / Opportunities / Tests or Trials or Threats) analysis because he / she should understand that in most of the cases, it is not only difficult to convincingly defend and explain someone else’s viewpoints, experiences, and language as one’s own but also very easy to identify the insincerity, laziness, dubiousness of whosoever tries to do it. Preparation of the Resume or the CV is a serious affair and the candidate must give some time and thought to it.

Special care must be taken of and utmost importance should be paid to the dress to be worn on the D-day. Without decorating and dressing himself / herself in the way that he / she would undoubtedly do on his / her day of marriage, the candidate must take care to remember the emphatic formality that is generally attached to this day. Accordingly, the candidate must present himself / herself in proper formal attire after getting to know from the placement trainer what formal attire is all about. In spite of hearsay or the advice of rumormongers or foolish taken-for-granted insulated individual knowledge about the dress code prescribed by the recruitment organization, the candidate shouldn’t wear any unnecessary article of clothing if the organization does not specifically prescribe it. Wearing a three-piece suit in the month of May is eye-catching but for the wrong reasons.

All said and done, the candidate must remember that as the most important preparation for the Placement Day, he / she must secure pass marks in all the papers of all the semesters till the Placement Day to be even eligible to take part in the selection process. Though a candidate may get a chance, in spite of having backlogs, and also get selected on the Placement Day, he / she shall not be considered eligible by the recruiting organization for the final call letter if he / she does not clear all his / her papers by the end of originally stipulated time period of the degree. The candidate must also be conscious of his / her attendance in the regular classes and the training and placement classes and behavior in these classes as well as the institution to avoid any last minute hassles through which his / her institution may be forced to prevent him / her from taking part in its placement program. All the students of the institution are also advised to put forth their best behavior on the Placement Day for the simple reason that if the visiting organization is not satisfied with the standard of discipline prevailing in the institute, it may not think it worthwhile to come again, a decision which will strike off not only one organization from the list of recruiters but also a few others if the word gets out. Every candidate must understand that if he / she pays importance to the Placement Day, he / she shall receive his / her due importance on that day.

Postscript: It won’t be wrong to compare the activities in an institution on the Placement Day to those in the market on any day. The Placement Day represents a buyer-seller scenario, in which products which can satisfy the demands of the buyers are bought by them at the demanded price. It is all about how well the candidates can advertise, package, and market themselves before and convince the recruiting organizations into buying them on the Placement Day. But, we should also remember that if a product is unfinished or does not have any quality then the question of any of the activities mentioned in the previous sentence does not arise. When the seller has nothing to offer, he / she better not come to the market. This is what the candidates must understand about and why they should prepare for the Placement Day.

At Indic Institute of Design & Research we prepare our students continuously for the placement day; it's a big day that can take the career of our students to dizzying heights. We therefore pay attention to overall preparation and grooming of our students right from day one in our college so that they are not left wanting at the crucial hour.

Higher Studies After Completing Engineering

Many engineers don’t realize what wonderful opportunities are available for them in the professional sector, if they go for further studies after their Bachelor of Technology or Bachelor of Engineering. For quite a few engineers, a B. Tech or BE degree, followed sooner or later by a job, ends further studies. Laziness or lack of further ambition (sometimes, the distinction between the two is blurred due to prestige consciousness, societal expectations, and dictates of psychology on a human being’s personality), low self confidence, and lack of knowledge about the benefits are some of the reasons which contribute to the phenomenon. For career-conscious engineers who want to get the best out of the professional sector in terms of money and job satisfaction, further studies are essential.

Master of Technology is a highly rewarding option after B. Tech or BE is over. Representing the next higher educational degree after engineering, it takes the engineers to the higher and more specialized levels of technology. A properly done M. Tech degree is well recognized in the industrial and the educational sectors and provides more paying and satisfying job opportunities than only a B. Tech or BE degree. The reason is not difficult to understand. Logically, a higher educational degree in the same field of study will lead its holder to jobs which will pay more and include more responsibility and trust. The number of years of experience required for a B. Tech or BE to reach a position in the professional sector will in most of the cases be more than that required by an M. Tech to reach the same position. In the field of education, the difference in preference shown is even more glaring as any day and on the face of it, most of the institutes of technology will prefer an M. Tech to a B. Tech or BE and that too with the readiness to pay a noticeably higher pay package. After M. Tech, an engineer, if he / she wishes, can go for a doctorate, which has a big demand in the areas of research and administration in the field of technology with highly lucrative pecuniary rewards and more gratifying work ethic and culture.

Students can also pursue their masters or MS in US universities. US universities offer very advanced & research oriented masters courses in engineering & technology areas. US Universities work on cutting edge & pioneering areas and students can choose to work and study for MS and subsequent PhD there. Students need to take the GRE examinations in general or subject specific GRE. Apart from this they have to take TOEFL exams too. Financials assistance are also available in US universities based on your GRE scores and also areas of work.

An MBA degree is generally considered the best possible option for a graduate of engineering in the professional sector and the sooner it is acquired after B. Tech or BE, the better it is for him / her. Whereas, a candidate with only a B. Tech or BE degree even after immediately getting a job, normally has to wait for several years in the organization before he / she can even be considered for positions of leadership, trust, and responsibility, an engineering graduate along with an MBA degree straightaway starts his career in an organization from the position of a manager. The career growth is much faster and many surveys also show that the pay package is exponentially higher after MBA when compared to the one before it for the same candidate. An MBA degree not only opens up better and more varied professional options but also represents higher societal and professional status for a graduate of engineering. Apart from giving an engineer a chance to display all those skills for which he / she was selected, it gives him / her the chance to exploit a lot of his / her other skills and indulge his / her interests in the professional sector which might prove productive in the long run, an opportunity which he / she may not have got in most of the jobs landed immediately after engineering. In most of the business schools, the percentage of engineers is higher than that of the students of any other discipline. A progressive increase in the percentage over the last few years reflects a growing consciousness among the engineers of the value of an MBA degree along with a B. Tech or BE degree.

As an educational and professional degree, a B. Tech or BE represents the first and necessary stage that a student has to qualify in order to become an engineer. Professionally speaking, it qualifies a student to call himself / herself an engineer and makes him / her eligible for a job. But neither is it the end of engineering studies nor does it represent the ultimate professional degree. Any engineer who wants to really go for value addition and make it count in the professional sector has to seriously consider the option of going for further studies. As has often been said: The more, the merrier.

Indic Institute of Design & Research, we provide inputs to the students about further studies and provide mentoring and counselling support for our students.

Preparation For Cracking CAT

Regarded by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) and countless others as the most difficult entrance examination in the world to crack, the Common Admission Test, or more commonly, CAT, designed, regulated, and conducted by the Indian Institutes of Management, is the only gateway to the seven IIM’s which are known and accepted as institutions of excellence when it comes to acquiring an MBA degree in India. The eligibility for appearance being graduation, a candidate in this unpredictable test, comprising questions having multiple answer options, is expected to demonstrate roughly equal competence in using English as a language, solving Mathematical problems, interpreting numerical or alphanumerical or verbal data and reading and comprehending the various styles and subject matter of writings on a variety of subjects in order to deserve a call from any one or more of the IIM’s.

Through its four sections of Verbal Ability (VA), Quantitative Aptitude (QA), Data Interpretation (DI) and Reading and Comprehension (RC), CAT tests the partial fitness of a candidate for the degree of Master of Business Administration (MBA); any one of the following process / processes, personal interview or group discussion and personal interview or analysis of a case study and personal interview is the determines the final selection of a candidate by an institute after the candidate gets a call from it on the basis of his / her CAT score. The consistency in the quality of this test makes its score acceptable to most of the business schools in India, apart from the IIM’s, except a few like FMS or IIFT or Narsee Monjee who conduct their own uniquely designed entrance tests to check the candidates for what is specifically and institutionally wanted from them or some others who, in their arrogance and to satisfy their own inflated egos, conduct their own breed of entrance tests just to advertise their own, but universally unacceptable, blind belief arising from an inferiority complex masquerading as superiority complex that they are no less than the IIM’s.

Since, we are talking about cracking CAT, let us first understand what “cracking CAT” means. Even with a sub-95 CAT percentile and without clearing the sectional and overall cutoffs set by the IIM’s, a candidate may get a call from some of the better business schools in India but it does not mean that he / she has “cracked” CAT. A candidate is said to have cracked CAT only when he / she gets a call from any one or more of the IIM’s on the basis of his / her CAT score. Now, that is normally possible with percentiles above 99. It also includes the added criterion of qualifying the cut-offs in all the individual sections and the overall cut-off of the test. At times, the IIM’s may give a call to a candidate with a percentile below 95, yet whose academic record is excellent and professional experience beyond the average. However, it is always considered safe to qualify the cut-offs and aim beyond 99 percentile.

Whenever the degree of difficulty of any examination is reputedly high, it unsettles the minds of most of the candidates because they simply don’t understand how and where to begin the preparation. The problems increase because CAT does not prescribe a definite syllabus and expect a candidate to learn by the rote and puke memorized vomit during the examination. Rather, it prefers him / her to demonstrate competence in those fundamental skills believed to be possessed by an above the average student who has studied properly up to his / her graduation. To put it quite simply, CAT designs its question paper to test the intelligence and smartness of a candidate rather than memory. The average candidate for CAT, used to questions which demand answers in a straightforward manner, is confounded when the questions are tricky or require analytical or interpretational methods to solve them. Quite interesting, it is also to note that solving any of the questions set by CAT requires a fundamental understanding of only those subjects taught till matriculation. CAT, as we come to understand, is actually not a difficult test but a test in which many of the questions take a lot of time to solve without proper practice. It is the very time consuming nature of the questions, which are to be selected and solved within a limited period of time, which makes CAT difficult.

The total number of questions in any CAT paper is considered humanly-impossible-to-solve within the given time frame and necessitates the adoption of a selective approach towards solving questions and, here too, the average candidate faces a problem, accustomed as he is to solving questions in the same order as they are printed on the question paper. The worst possible mistake is committed by the candidate when he / she starts solving the questions right from the word go without giving all the sections a good look. This gallant and cavalier attitude towards a question paper, which takes some of the better minds in the country six months to design, pays scant respect to a test which deserves quite a lot of it. As a result, the candidate is not able to judge the degree of difficulty of the paper and fails to ascertain the right number of questions required to solve for cracking it. Mentally blinded by his / her faith in reputation of CAT for setting difficult questions, he / she also fails to identify the easier questions, which not only would have been easier to solve but could also have left him with more time to increase his / her number of attempts. Back home after giving the examination, when he / she analyzes the paper with a relaxed and easy mindset, he / she starts noticing all the easy and straightforwardly simple questions, among the difficult and tricky ones, which could have been so easy to solve, had he / she only bothered to look for them. CAT is all about handling pressure rather than solving impossibly difficult problems. It is more about finding out the chicken, egg, and prawn pieces (easy questions) in a plate full of noodles than messing around with the remaining constituents of the dish. One of the more important points that aspirants for MBA should remember is that the CAT paper is designed to check a candidate’s power of observation, quality of judgment, ability of selection, and, most importantly, smartness in avoiding those problems, whose solutions are worth less than the amount of time spent on trying to work them out; a quality much desired for but insufficiently found.

How should one begin his / her preparation for CAT? The bases of the questions in the VA section are grammar, vocabulary, and logic. For vocabulary, I would straightaway recommend solving Word Power Made Easy by Norman Lewis and going through those sections of High School English Grammar and Composition by P. C. Wren and H. Martin, which deal with the prefixes and suffixes used in English as well as the Greek and Latin prefixes and suffixes as the preliminary stages of preparation after which they can build further on the acquired foundation. Candidates have to remember that building a good vocabulary is a process of evolution rather than revolution and thus, takes time and a lot of practice. Rather than forcibly cramming up words at a rate which swamps their brains, they should focus more on coming across or using unfamiliar words repeatedly and also their etymologies because in CAT, all the questions are followed by answer options and a candidate’s photographic and associative memories can be expected to work much better on the direct vocabulary questions, if he / she has encountered the words, used in the question, before. Instead of memorizing words, it is much better to go through the word lists as many times as possible because reading takes much less time than cramming. The candidates should focus more on the usage of the words than their dictionary meanings because of the myriad semantic functions that a word may carry out in connected discourse.
For grammar, the candidates can follow High School English Grammar and Composition by P. C. Wren and H. Martin or A Millennium Guide to Writing and Speaking Skills by J. K. Chand and B. C. Das or any book on grammar by Michael Swan or Thomson and Martinet. The candidate has to remember that he / she does not have to study the entire book but only those sections that are prescribed for a student up to matriculation. Grammar goes by rules, so it is better to learn and understand those rules than try and determine the error or, if necessary, correct a sentence on the basis of how correct it sounds to the ears. After this, he / she has to practice on and solve as many grammatical error questions as possible.

A logical mind is very important for all the sections and especially VA, in which one comes across questions involving arrangement of jumbled-up sentences, critical reasoning, and deductive and inductive logic. The candidate, in order to sharpen his / her mind logically, is recommended Inductive Logic and Deductive Logic by N. Durzie and plenty of practice on such questions.
RC is always troublesome for most of the aspirants of CAT because of their “wonderfully voracious” reading habits. For the generation X aspirants, who firmly believe in doing everything rather than reading about a few of them, reading is both tiresome and loathsome. Presence of overabundant energy and eternal restlessness precludes their ever dynamic minds from getting involved in the static activity of reading with patience. To worsen matters, they are so accustomed to an unquestioningly straightforward, warrior-like, and literal interpretation and acceptance of things and matters as they appear, that they seldom have the capability and rarely feel the necessity of dissecting and analyzing what appears on the surface. Overt focus on the superficial aspects of English and its spoken version makes them oblivious to the underlying meaning of the written word and also blunts their recognition of the fact that in RC, English is as much about literature as it is about language. To top it all, the minds of most of the aspirants are so exhaustively taken up by the affairs of their own ways of living that any awareness of any other subject, which does not fully concern them, is barely tolerable. Extreme focus and misplaced concentration cause most of the aspirants to mistake a part for the whole while deficient vocabulary causes the mind to fool around with effective comprehension of the passage. Aspirants aiming to do well in RC must remember a few points. CAT may set a passage on any topic under the sun, so it is considered smart as well as sensible to have a basic understanding of as many subjects as possible. Many of the passages deal with topics, which are considered boring by many of the aspirants so it is always advisable to cultivate the habit of indiscriminate and mechanical reading without losing focus. When it is a matter of any topic under the sun, it also pays to have a basic understanding of as many styles and tones in which a piece of writing may occur. Apart from that, a sound understanding of the various figures of speech is also useful. Practicing the technique of speed reading is essential because it helps the candidate in answering the questions of those interminably long passages which are expected, by the IIM’s of course!, to be solved within a few minutes. Choosing which passage to solve depends upon the degree of difficulty of its language, thought process, and associated questions and its subject, so the candidate must ensure that he / she has a few topics of his / her interest while nursing the hope that a serendipitous occurrence will bring him / her across a passage which is from or relates to his / her area of interest. The ability to read in between the lines is considered to be of primary importance because no CAT RC passage worth its grain will ever allow a candidate to escape by answering only direct or straightforward questions.
Preparation for QA is all about a fundamental understanding of all the concepts related to the various areas of Mathematics up to the 12th class. Aligned to it is the ability of a candidate to understand exactly what a question demands because questions in CAT are rarely straightforward or at least have not been so ever since MBA became “the degree to acquire” in the professional sector. Apart from that, a clear understanding of the techniques of Vedic Arithmetic helps the candidate to not only perform quick calculations but also discover the shortest cut instead of stupidly puerile shortcuts. Finally, continuous practice enables the candidate to easily identify the easier questions, recognize their nature, and select and solve them quickly.

DI involves a honing of the ability to logically interpret and understand data from the point of view of the accompanying question or questions within the shortest possible period of time. It also involves a fundamental understanding of the basic concepts of Statistics. A sound knowledge of fractions and percentages, ratio and proportion, permutation and combination, theory of counting, cubes and cube roots and squares and square roots is also unavoidable because a ready-in-the-memory information of their numerical values and an understanding of the techniques to find such values not only saves a lot of time which is always at a premium in CAT but also prevents the candidate from cluttering the limited Rough Space with unnecessary ditches, which not only ruin the aesthetics of the paper but may also confuse the him / her later on. The abilities to analyze and comprehend the available data, logically and critically, in accordance with the questions asked require the candidate to practice on and increase his / her proficiency in logical and reasoning problems and also have the discerning ability to judge and distinguish between necessary information and useless data. Inductive Logic and Deductive Logic by N. Durzie and books on teasers and puzzles, apart from the books related to the areas mentioned above have to be properly understood by any of the aspirants gunning to do well in DI. A lot of practice on the problems related to the areas mentioned above will take care of the rest.

The most important part of the preparation for CAT, which is unpredictable and in which it is impossible to attempt and solve all the questions within the time limit allowed, is mainly about managing time and handling pressure. It takes a lot of practice and judgment on part of the candidate to develop the abilities to select and solve as many questions as possible in the actual CAT because of its formidable reputation for going against the predictions of even the most seasoned of minds, involved in preparing innumerable candidates for it. Going a step beyond the chameleon, CAT has till now played around with some of its more fundamental aspects, a present day fact which no one in his / her wildest imagination would even have suspected CAT of doing in the past. No two CAT papers have ever been the same except for the fact that they are divided into an earlier-declared number of sections and have questions in them. Thus, candidates who have bothered to practice on previous CAT papers to get a feel of CAT must realize that, that is the only benefit of that practice. It would be foolish to expect a repetition of the types or patterns of questions. The best strategy to approach CAT involves a lot of practice, readiness to accept and counter unpredictability, the ability to adapt and innovate and, most importantly, an open mindedness that rejects any predetermined game plan. Spending the first 5 to 10 minutes reading the question paper to get a feel of the degree of difficulty, identify the sitters, decide the amount of time to be allotted to the different sections judiciously and set the sectional and overall cutoffs mentally is considered wisdom in CAT. The presence of negative marks for every wrong answer should be enough to deter even the most hardened of bluff-masters, no matter how intuitive they are, from using guesswork to answer questions. A candidate must always remember that a wrong answer not only reduces his / her hard-earned score but also decreases his / her percentile noticeably in the fierce competition of CAT where even the digits to the right of the decimal point of a negative number have sufficient power to ruin his / her percentile and, consequently, foul his / her ranking. Wasting a lot of time in a desperate bid to get a single question correct is unwise and a candidate must avoid that.

When it comes to practice, the candidates must always time themselves while solving questions. Aspirants for CAT would do well to go for systematic coaching in any CAT training institute of repute or, at least, appear in the simulated CAT series (appeared by more than fifty thousand aspirants throughout India) conducted by the institutes themselves, which will not only give them a proper understanding of CAT but also a sense of how well they can actually swim in the sea of competition. If an aspirant for CAT understands and follows all the above mentioned tips sincerely, then he / she should be able crack CAT.

The Common Admission Test is the first tier of a three-tiered selection process to find out the best available talents for the degree of MBA from the IIM’s. In a world, where Mammon is the ruling deity, an MBA from any of the premier management institutes is a demigod and if he / she happens to be from the IIM’s, he / she is, at least, a god in the Indian professional sector. The world runs on money and the various ideas to generate a lot of it, and an MBA degree holder is precisely concerned with the administration of such affairs. Not that he / she is complaining because the rewards are excellent. And since, the income at the end of the day may run into astronomical figures, the candidates must not only recognize the importance of an MBA degree from the IIM’s but also learn to respect CAT and put forth their best, humanly possible, efforts. Respect will lead to seriousness, which will develop into the carefulness, dedication, and perseverance required to produce the determined effort necessary to crack CAT.

Academic Environment at Indic

There is no shortcut to success. Whosoever had said this for the first time was probably thinking of academics. The pursuit of studies should be a singular endeavor at any given point of time. Once upon a time in India, the children of the high and the mighty went to the gurukul not only to fulfill the requirements of the first of the four stages of the Sanatana dharmic life of an individual but also to get educated in an atmosphere which was pristine and without distractions. The ancient gurukul was not without its faults. Apart from the subliminal politics played in the name of social, religious, and ethical requirements, it was also never truly democratic; commoners were never allowed entry.

Adopting the structural model of the gurukul, Indic strives to provide effective education to all its students and always keeps its doors open to anyone who is serious about studies. Adopting a Spartan way of academic life with an Athenian outlook towards it within its sprawling 50 acre campus of natural greenery and beauty, Indic aims at producing not only engineers of quality but also complete human beings, who given a chance will always try to get the best out of their lives. The highly qualified members of the faculty are more like friendly facilitators who believe in devising newer methods of teaching to make learning interesting for the students. They are a far cry from the feudalistic village school headmaster prototypes who believe in the concept of teaching through fear, and rigid and hidebound processes or traditionally-accepted-and-continued-but-presently-moribund methodologies. With a student teacher ratio of 13:1 against the AICTE requirement of 15:1, Indic ensures that the members of the faculty are more than available whenever any student needs them. The uniquely friendly and helpful nature of relationship among the members of the faculty, the officials of administration, and the students is one of the USP’s of Indic and goes a long way in strengthening its democratic and egalitarian culture. It probably also explains why Indic is unlike any other engineering college in the country. Fully equipped laboratories provide the students with an opportunity to practically reinforce their theoretical learning. Members of the faculty visit the in-campus hostels on a rotation basis to provide further help in studies to the students whenever required. All said and done, Indic tries to develop students who are not only serious about their studies but also understand what they study and why they do it, so that they can put their knowledge to practical use in any given situation where rote-learned theorists would be swept out of existence.

Following quite humanistic standards of discipline, Indic is open to suggestions both from the members of the faculty and the students in all the spheres including academics, and aims, in the long run, to produce students who in their right frame of mind will never lose the sense of right or wrong and always keep their dignity no matter what the situation they are in. Frequent tests are conducted not only to check the progress of the students but also to keep them constantly interested in their studies. Apart from the regular classes, tutorial classes are religiously conducted to ensure that the understanding of any concept by a student is complete. Regular counseling of the students also ensures that they come up with their problems other than academic ones to the faculty members in charge of student welfare. Timely seminars are conducted to expose the students to the higher and subtler aspects of the subjects that they study or are interested in. With the highest degree of emphasis on academics, Indic also keeps the parents constantly informed about their wards’ progress. The success of any organization requires a high degree of cooperation among all its members and Indic is an example of that. Administration in Indic is a harmonious mixture of strictness and benevolence and, consequently, achieves its objective of running the institution smoothly in a big way.

Away from the din and bustle of the city life with an environment free from distracting and disturbing influences, Indic is the ideal training camp for individuals who have a single-minded focus on and devotion towards studies when they are at it. This is not to say that non academic activities are not a part of life in Indic but it is to impress upon the fact that when it comes to academics, Indic does not believe in shortcuts. “True ease in writing comes from art, not chance, / As those move easiest, who have learnt to dance.” Indic teaches you that “art” of “dance”, which enables you to move easily and competently in the realm of academic excellence.

At Indic Institute of Design & Research we do not want to compromise on education. Extracurricular activities does not waver our attention from our basic and primary responsibility.
