Recession And The Indian Economy

As the world continues to reel under the global recession and economic meltdown, I think it better to clarify the reality of its impact on the Indian economy. Recession means a general slowdown in economic activity over a period of time when production as measured by Gross Domestic Product (GDP), employment, investment spending, capacity utilization, household incomes, business profits and inflation falls while bankruptcies and unemployment rise. By this definition, almost all the countries of the world, including the ones with strong economies, have faced recessions at some time or the other in their economic histories.

I don’t deny that we have had a rough time since September 2008 when the global recession hit our job market. There were job losses in the exports, finances, textiles, automobiles and BPO-KPO sectors and the salaries of even those lucky enough to survive were slashed. But it takes more than that to economically derail a resilient civilization of more than five thousand years. Despite the meltdown, India did well during and after the crisis and as early as March, 2009 announced that hope was back while the worst was over.

Now, whatever is happening elsewhere, things in India have started getting better. This year has seen a positive increase in spending and it’s estimated that in the next 3 years, corporate India will invest $ 250 billion and over the next year close to a million jobs would be added. The GDP is expected to grow at 8.5% up to 2014 and continue at 7.5% after that up to 2018 with the per capita income tripling from $ 1050 to $ 3400 by 2019, the year by which India is expected to become a $ 4 trillion economy. The sectors expected to witness the most significant increase in new jobs are health, hospitality, info-tech, real estate and construction, manufacturing, automobiles, engineering, financial services, telecom and education. Industrial growth has risen in the last two quarters and from an estimate that the Indian automobile industry will create another 5 million jobs by 2012 which is in tandem with the Automotive Mission Plan to create around 25 million jobs by 2016 along with the Government investing $ 100 billion dollars in infrastructure alone, much better times are ahead.

No benefit comes without the endeavor and the requisite skills to acquire and enjoy it. My advice to all of you willing to be a part of the given rosy picture would be to decide upon the right sector now and take steps to empower yourself with the requirements and expectations of that sector. The future is very bright; let’s not fail for the want of properly trained eyes to seize and enjoy its glitz.

It is in this context where colleges like Indic Institute of Design & Research participate to give qualitative education to its students and prepares them to be a vital part of the Indian economy.

Indic Institute of Design & Research is an engineering college in the vicinity of Khurda, Bhubaneswar, Orissa. It offers B.Tech degree courses in engineering education. It has been started by people who have gone from corporate and industry background to provide quality education to the next generation. Indic admits students through the JEE examination of Orissa.

Indic Institute of Design and Research though situated close to the heart of Bhubaneswar, is sufficiently removed from the hustle and bustle to provide a serene environment for higher learning. The college has excellent infrastructure with 35 acres of lush green compact campus, surrounded by vegetation and greenery.

Established with a view to foster human values and liberal and progressive education, Indic believes in engaging thought leaders of various fields of learning in the ultimate task of educating and honing young minds to churn out practical, visionary, and innovative technocrats who would in the long run determine and better the technological destiny of mankind.

Unique in its structure, methods and goals, Indic Institute of Design and Research is strongly rooted in a philosophy of training and research that emphasizes the intimate relationships between knowledge and its application and seeks to promote the creation of an ideal society.

Welcome to INDIC, where studies move along with various co-curricular activities and where there is fun while you learn. Instead of the feudalistic and decadently traditional teacher, INDIC believes in the facilitating mentor, who is a friend, philosopher, and guide of the students and makes them understand engineering. With experienced and dynamic members of the faculty along with equally well-equipped support staff, INDIC is a center of learning with a difference.

With a training and placement department which trains students from the first till the last semester (INDIC is the only one in Orissa doing it) for placements, INDIC promises its students to help them in their placement even after they have passed from the college. The first and only college in Orissa to provide in-campus hostel facilities to its students within 12 months of its inception, INDIC also caters to all the other necessities of a budding engineer.

Administration in INDIC is a combination of discipline and flexibility and rules and human values. Welding insightful judgment with an objective understanding of human nature and reality, INDIC stands out in its strong bonding among the students, the members of the faculty, the administration and the support staff, a phenomenon considered almost impossible in a technical institute.

INDIC literally means India in German and to me it represents a unity in its vast diversity of students, the staff members, opinions, cultures and mindsets. Welcome to INDIC in all its colors. Stay back and be a part of it. We will make it the experience of a lifetime for you.

Engineering As a Career India

Choosing the right career after intermediation is tough work for inexperienced minds, especially, in a country where opinionated advisors are many but objective guides few. Among the choices available, Engineering seems, logically, to be the most favorable option under the circumstances in the present and the promise of the future. After the boom of 2007-2008 in the Engineering job sector followed by some dearth in the availability of jobs for the next one and a half years, things have become optimistic. With India and many of the other developing nations of the world gearing up for the status of a developed economy, breathtaking technological advancement, and rapid industrialization, the future will only get better and brighter for the Information and Technology, Real Estate, Construction, Automobile, Telecom and Manufacturing sectors.

Since 2009, there has been an average increase of 8.5% in the salaries in these sectors which is all set to touch 15% by 2011. But, with many uninformed and unaware parents shying away from Engineering as a career for their wards, in spite of insufficient number of Engineering institutes in the country leading to a shortfall in the supply of engineers against requirement in the market, this demand will shoot up to alarming proportions, if the defensive mindset of the parents and their wards continues.

We will witness an addition of over .3 million jobs in the above mentioned sectors in India by 2011 with a $ 100 billion investment by the Government in infrastructure alone. The automobile industry will add around 5 million jobs by 2012. With the GDP expected to grow at 8% per annum up to 2014, India is expected to become a$ 4 trillion economy by 2019 with per capita income tripling from $ 1050 to $ 3400 by 2019. With the manufacturing sector registering an all time high growth rate of 12% per annum and the IT sector going steady at 5.5% per annum, things will only get better and brighter.

The fairy tale has just begun. But, even with these jobs available, are we ready for them? The degree and scope of employment will continue to increase but will we be employable? Look ahead, look deep, and think twice.

The next time, you bypass or are apprehensive of Engineering as a career, remember the statistics above and consider what a wonderfully rewarding and satisfying future could also be yours with the right decision and effort on your part at the right time. To decide is to lead.

It is in this context where colleges like Indic Institute of Design & Research participate to give qualitative education to its students and prepares them to be part of the IT revolution which is a vital part of the Indian economy.

BPUT - Technical University of Orissa, India

Once upon a time, an average student aspiring to be an engineer had to look beyond the frontiers of Orissa to pursue that dream; the choice of engineering institutes in Orissa being limited to only a few government and private ones. With the establishment of BPUT in Orissa in 2003, the number of institutes of technology opening up every year has been prolific. With over a hundred engineering colleges and many other technical, regular, and professional institutions within its ambit at the present, the BPUT has more or less reduced the exodus of the average aspirants for these courses beyond Orissa by a huge margin.

The systematic and advanced curriculum of BPUT and its timely and proper conduction of examination, evaluation of answer sheets, and declaration of results have also made many of the colleges affiliated to it the destination of many a student from the other states across the country. A harmonious combination of discipline and flexibility which is well reflected in the rules and regulations (academic or otherwise) prescribed for the affiliated colleges and their students has also led to the achievement of an open minded pattern of learning and honing of the other faculties of the student’s mind and the body in a relaxed and non-restricted atmosphere. Frequent seminars and teacher training programs have also led to the continuous development and evolution of the knowledge and talent of the members of the faculty who have in turn churned out competent engineers year after year. No doubt, as an organization made by human beings, BPUT also has its own share of problems and faults but from experience, I can well attest that they are the products of Inexperience, lack of resources, and immaturity (it is the youngest university of technology in the country) rather than those of any genuine problems of functioning or incompetence. Better equipped universities have faced even bigger problems and still continued to exist.

BPUT still has some way to go in its journey to becoming the premier university of technology in the country but its journey is well begun.

Indic Institute of Design & Research is an engineering college which is affiliated to BPUT and is located in the vicinity of Khurda, Bhubaneswar, Orissa. It offers B.Tech degree courses in engineering education. It has been started by people who have gone from corporate and industry background to provide quality education to the next generation. Indic admits students through the JEE examination of Orissa.

Indian IT Industry - The Way Forward

Described as the fourth biggest concept in the universe after Creation, Time, and Communication, Information rules the functioning of the world at large and in tandem with Technology in the present generation, it promises to reach unprecedented heights in the near future. Whosoever thinks that recruitment in the IT sector had reached a point of saturation after the boom period of 2007-2008 has to revise his/ her opinion since the recruitment now is better than it was before the recession.

Having dominated the job market with the greatest number of new job additions year after year with a one and a half year slump after 2008, India’s IT and ITES industry is showing signs of stability. Recruitment has gone up from 10% to 15% this year and business analysts and consultants are in great demand. NASSCOM estimates that the Indian IT-BPO industry is slated to record a 5.5% growth and reach $ 49.7 billion by 2010. While entry level hiring is more or less need based, knowledge-based out sourcing is still going strong. Jobs are definitely back in the Indian IT industry with TCS, Infosys and WIPRO hiring more than 25000 people and announcing an average salary hike of 9% in the 3rd quarter of the financial year. TCS is scheduled to recruit around 11000 employees more, later this year. Even though the pressures of the recession will remain, many of the projects, which were deferred, will be definitely revived.

It is very difficult to imagine a world without information and technology. Information is necessary for any progress to take place and technology makes that information easier to process and implement. It is quite possible that, at times, IT will take a pause in its path of progress but it will be a halt to regulate its own speed and move forward more efficiently. As far as the IT industry in India is concerned, it has only one way to go and carry others along with it: FORWARD !!!

Orissa is progressing full steam towards robust economic development and has a good representation of IT industry present in Bhubaneswar, Orissa. The government is encouraging the setting up of the IT/Software companies and has set up couple of IT parks and Infocities to facilitate this.

It is in this context where colleges like Indic Institute of Design & Research participate to give qualitative education to its students and prepares them to be part of the IT revolution which is a vital part of the Indian economy.
