Engineering As a Career India

Choosing the right career after intermediation is tough work for inexperienced minds, especially, in a country where opinionated advisors are many but objective guides few. Among the choices available, Engineering seems, logically, to be the most favorable option under the circumstances in the present and the promise of the future. After the boom of 2007-2008 in the Engineering job sector followed by some dearth in the availability of jobs for the next one and a half years, things have become optimistic. With India and many of the other developing nations of the world gearing up for the status of a developed economy, breathtaking technological advancement, and rapid industrialization, the future will only get better and brighter for the Information and Technology, Real Estate, Construction, Automobile, Telecom and Manufacturing sectors.

Since 2009, there has been an average increase of 8.5% in the salaries in these sectors which is all set to touch 15% by 2011. But, with many uninformed and unaware parents shying away from Engineering as a career for their wards, in spite of insufficient number of Engineering institutes in the country leading to a shortfall in the supply of engineers against requirement in the market, this demand will shoot up to alarming proportions, if the defensive mindset of the parents and their wards continues.

We will witness an addition of over .3 million jobs in the above mentioned sectors in India by 2011 with a $ 100 billion investment by the Government in infrastructure alone. The automobile industry will add around 5 million jobs by 2012. With the GDP expected to grow at 8% per annum up to 2014, India is expected to become a$ 4 trillion economy by 2019 with per capita income tripling from $ 1050 to $ 3400 by 2019. With the manufacturing sector registering an all time high growth rate of 12% per annum and the IT sector going steady at 5.5% per annum, things will only get better and brighter.

The fairy tale has just begun. But, even with these jobs available, are we ready for them? The degree and scope of employment will continue to increase but will we be employable? Look ahead, look deep, and think twice.

The next time, you bypass or are apprehensive of Engineering as a career, remember the statistics above and consider what a wonderfully rewarding and satisfying future could also be yours with the right decision and effort on your part at the right time. To decide is to lead.

It is in this context where colleges like Indic Institute of Design & Research participate to give qualitative education to its students and prepares them to be part of the IT revolution which is a vital part of the Indian economy.

Indic Institute of Design & Research is an engineering college in the vicinity of Khurda, Bhubaneswar, Orissa. It offers B.Tech degree courses in engineering education.
